The lowest advertised rate is not the total cost
A messaging platform may advertise a low monthly software price while adding message credit markups. To compare fairly, calculate your software license or subscription, gateway rate per segment, carrier surcharges, phone numbers, 10DLC registration and maintenance costs. Message destinations and MMS usage can change the total.
Use your own SMS gateway
UltraSMSScript lets customers connect supported gateway accounts, including TextGrid, Telnyx, Twilio, SignalWire, Bandwidth and Plivo. The gateway charges you directly for delivery while UltraSMSScript provides campaigns, scheduling, contacts, replies and reporting. This separates software cost from message transmission charges.
Understand segments, not just messages
One long SMS may be billed as multiple segments. Unicode characters, encoding and message length can affect segment counts. A campaign to 100,000 recipients may involve more than 100,000 billable segments, depending on the content.
Compare at realistic sending volumes
At a hypothetical rate of $0.0035 per segment, 100,000 segments cost $350 before additional charges. At $0.01 they cost $1,000, and at $0.04 they cost $4,000. These examples illustrate the effect of per-segment pricing, not a guaranteed current quote. TextGrid was listed on the published article with a starting rate of $0.0035; verify live provider pricing.
Build a cost model for your business
Estimate monthly segments, destinations, sender numbers, registrations, hosting, software and support. If you resell SMS, add your planned customer support and margins. A platform that lets you choose supported providers can help you revisit the economics as your volume changes.
What determines the real cost of a text message?
The advertised per-message rate is only a starting point. Your actual bill may depend on the destination country, message direction, number type, carrier surcharges, number rental, registration fees and the number of billable SMS segments. A lower base rate can become a higher total cost if the traffic mix or additional charges differ.
Software and delivery should be compared separately. UltraSMSScript is the campaign-management platform; a supported gateway such as Telnyx, Twilio, TextGrid, Bandwidth, SignalWire or Plivo transports messages and sets the applicable delivery charges. UltraSMSScript does not guarantee that any particular gateway has the lowest rate.
Why one message can be billed as multiple SMS segments
SMS is commonly billed by segment rather than by the number of times you press Send. A standard GSM-7 message may fit into one segment at up to 160 characters, while a longer concatenated message typically uses 153 characters per segment. Messages containing characters that require UCS-2 encoding, such as many emoji, can have much lower limits: commonly 70 characters for a single segment and 67 per segment for concatenated messages.
For example, a 320-character GSM-7 message generally requires three concatenated segments, not two. The exact segmentation depends on the characters and encoding. Review the gateway's segment counter before scheduling a high-volume campaign.
Illustrative SMS delivery cost at different volumes
The following example uses a hypothetical blended delivery cost of $0.008 per billable segment, excluding additional fees. It demonstrates the calculation, not a current quote from any provider. Multiply billable segments by the applicable rate, then add number rental, carrier surcharges, registration and other charges.
| Messages sent | At 1 segment each | At 2 segments each |
|---|---|---|
| 10,000 | $80 | $160 |
| 100,000 | $800 | $1,600 |
| 1,000,000 | $8,000 | $16,000 |
Illustrative delivery-only totals at $0.008 per segment. Actual prices vary; the table excludes software, carrier surcharges, phone numbers, registration, taxes and other fees.
Compare total monthly cost, not just gateway rates
To compare providers fairly, ask each one for a quote covering the same destinations, number types, inbound/outbound mix, monthly volume and expected segment length. Then include the software plan, number rental, carrier charges and any applicable 10DLC registration expenses. The cheapest quoted rate per segment is not necessarily the lowest-cost operating model.
For example, a difference of $0.001 per segment changes delivery spend by $100 across 100,000 segments. Whether that saving matters depends on reliability, coverage, support and the other charges in the quote. Delivery quality and compliance are business requirements, not optional extras to trade away for a headline rate.
10DLC, toll-free and other messaging considerations
In the United States, application-to-person messaging over local long-code numbers commonly involves 10DLC registration and campaign requirements. Toll-free messaging has its own verification considerations. Registration and carrier fees may apply independently of software licensing. A compliant campaign also needs appropriate consent, clear sender identification where required, and functioning opt-out handling.
UltraSMSScript's Telnyx integration supports eligible client brand and campaign registration workflows. Registration approval, carrier rules and costs remain subject to the provider and relevant messaging ecosystem. Do not estimate your final cost without accounting for these items.
Practical ways to control messaging spend
Write concise messages to reduce unnecessary segmentation, avoid accidental Unicode characters when practical, remove invalid or opted-out contacts, and target recipients who have agreed to receive the content. Test message rendering and links before sending a large campaign. Monitor delivery reports and compare expected versus billed segments over time.

Frequently asked questions
Does UltraSMSScript add a markup to my gateway SMS charges?
The BYOC model lets you pay your supported SMS gateway directly. Review the selected software plan and provider billing separately.
Why does a long text cost more?
SMS providers generally bill per segment; long or differently encoded messages can require multiple segments.
Is $0.0035 a guaranteed rate?
No. It is a published starting-rate example and must be confirmed with the gateway for your message type, destination and applicable fees.
